Okay folks…it’s been a long time coming, but here is Ultraboy’s first full length release “The Best of Bread”. The title was a joke and pretty funny as it sets the tone for some of the music on the album. Ultraboy was the band that oozed forth from the ashes of the Singing Spoons and Zen Lemmings. Me and Chris from the Spoons and Kelly from Zen Lemmings. At this point our music was pretty weird as far and rock or pop was concerned. Chris’ guitar playing filled up a lot of space with its washy,Bob Mould-like crunch. Of course, who could forget the powerfully insane drumming of Kelly Shane? We recorded this stuff pretty quickly at Georgia Street with the “Wizard of Rock” Tommy Hamilton. Kelly and I were into making weird sound effects and loops from all the strange albums we would collect from our days at Vinyl fever. I liked making primitive tape loops on cassettes which can be heard in the “kiss the goat!” segment in “Down with 3 inches” and a good bit of noise at the end of “I Can’t Think”. Kelly contributes a lot to that ending with his classic “Their existing supplies of Jello…” sample. I think that was from an lp he had that skipped in a way so that it sounded like they were saying something about their jello supply. Maybe Kelly will post and elaborate. I remember we thought it was hilarious to rip off other people’s work. The lyrics in “Down with 3 inches” are stolen from Morrissey and the riff is a mutant of the song “Black Sabbath” by the group of the same name. The title of the album is an obvious rip off.”Big Fat yeast Roll” was a food item served at Quincy’s steakhouses and the end of the song is a cop from Rush’s “Working Man”. A song that has loomed large in my life for some reason. Even the album title is a cop. It came from an idea that Chris’ had about including an 8 track of the soft rock group Bread’s “Best of ” in each of the Ultraboy box set. Unfortunately that box set never materialized as we broke up less than 2 years later. So without further adieu, dust off your goats and roll up your vegetables…the “Best of Bread” awaits!
