This is the Singing Spoons tape released in 1988. It features the line-up of me, John Hintz, Chris Gissendanner, John Barlow. It was recorded by Dave Murphy and features some pretty great, sloppy rock n’ roll. People really seemed to like this stuff, but our live shows were pretty chaotic. We had a tendency to make fools out of ourselves onstage and we usually played for way too long and way too loud. John B. left right before this tape came out and was replaced by Josh Clemons.

It was difficult finding a halfway decent surviving copy of this so some parts have drop outs and rough quality especially part of “Fish Goliath”. Hopefully this can be overlooked and the music will still be enjoyable.

Dave Murphy was invaluable during the recording of this as he actually taught us about our guitars needing to be intonated. This vastly improved things onstage.

Hearing this now for the first time in years, it surprises me as to how primitive we sound. The songs themselves are simple in some ways, but usually contain a surprise or two. What I do doubt is if anybody playing at my age (19) was writing this many of their own songs and really pushing for it. This was an extremely volatile period in my life that continued through to my early 20′s. These are songs of heartache and despair, drunkeness and self revelation. These are songs of cluelessness regarding the opposite sex and finally these are songs of a bunch of clowns enjoying themselves. Music as healer. I am so pretentious. During mixdown I remember we bought a ton of Black Label 11-11 malt liquor. That shit gave me the worst headache ever.
