The Exploding Madonna
The Exploding Madonna is the newest band project I have been involved in. It can be described as loud. It can be described as louder and finally it can be described as loudest.I play drums, Chris Fabian plays bass/freaks out and Paul Burdack plays guitar and remains quite mysterious. We have been described as Floyd meets the Surfers meets My Bloody Valentine. I really don’t like the comparisons too much when it comes to music. I hate categories even more. Anyway, this is a collage I made and it contains elements of Exploding Madonna jams as well as solo stuff I did for a student film soundtrack that was never used. We have a new album out available at our online store as well as t-shirts n’ stuff. There are more legitimate mp3′s on the band site as well. We are playing some shows starting this Sunday March 19 at the Beta Bar. An improv show will be performed 3/25 at All Saints Cafe. This will feature no predetermined music so it will probably be more soundscapy weirdness than our usual assualt on the senses. we have a tentative date in Pensacola on Friday the 31st of March as well at the Handlebar.
I like the collage. Would be nice to hear it at a higher volume than I can rock on my office computer. Y’all should come up to Oxford to play because Oxford kinda sucks, nobody in your audience would get you, and it’s a hell of a long drive from Tally. That is a good deal for you and I know you’re tempted. On the other hand, Sweet Tea Studio is located here in a building that at first glance appears to be a condemned wreck, but upon closer inspection looks like a piece of crap with suspiciously intact metal doors and windows. (The windows aren’t metal.) The guy who runs it is some kinda wunderkind who won or was nominated for a grammy for recording Elvis Costello or some shit, at Sweet Tea.
Yeah but anyway, cool stuff by the Madonna!
I could totally hear that the approach to songwriting has become more epistemological.
I don’t know what you mean? How about “Epistle to Dippy” by Donovan. That guy was lame.
You must not of read your own band’s website, whereupon it says: “Summer 2003 saw the appearance of Mike Coleman as the new drummer of the band and a more epistemological and sound approach to songwriting.” Although “Epistle to Dippy” is a kick-ass song.
But not as kick-ass as this item, of which as of recently I am the proud owner of: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=512074
Weird thing is it actually plays and sounds pretty good.
Now i remember! Uhhh I have nothing to do with the pretentious ramblings of Chris Fabian. Bronco bass is very cool and great for recording. Especially when you’re the only guy and you have to move around all those buttons and switches and stuff. Gonna catch Wilco tonight. Dino Jr is on April 2 here. You should come down for it ya bastard!
I done seen Dino Jr. already. Twice even! They rocked. Still, if I were there, I’d go. I’ll be in town over Easter weekend homeslice.
Sounds like you guys have it rough with your fancy “concerts.” Here’s an idea: how about you Spoons reunite and truck over here to Soulless Nascar-ville, North Carolina, and play a show for me since I never got to see you live? Seriously this town is the biggest city in NC and yet is the worst live-music place I’ve ever lived in. Everyone goes to Asheville and Chapel Hill. I’ve gotten to see one Yo La Tengo show since I moved here, which is a far cry from living blocks from the EARL in Atlanta (or Finale’s in Tallahassee). And is this the real reunited Dino Jr.?
I think it’s the real, original Dino Jr. – J, Lou, and Murph, even. I read an interview with them at the start of this tour and it sounded like J wasn’t as into it as Lou and Murph, but then again J’s supposedly not exactly Mr. Sociable. He’s got a new group called Witch.
Yeah, I like it. I may use it as an opening song to my seminar tomorrow on nematode sperm storage organs. I may also try to use “epistemological” in my talk. I will also try to connect Donovan to the phenonmenon of “wanking”, which is (and I am being scientifically serious here) when male nematodes try to copulate with their heads.
Here we go. Donovan “wanking” John Mellencamp.

I hear Donovan loves his shirt. Anyhow, I saw the reunited Dinosaur Jr. back in July of last year in Atlanta. They blew my socks off. I would suggest seeing them. From what I’ve heard they’re getting along great and have new album plans. It probably doesn’t hurt to cash in a little. They all deserve it. As for Mellonhead, I heard that Donovan opened for him on a recent tour which is probably where that photo is from. Are you sure that’s not Richard Simmons?
Handlebar gig is cancelled by the way. Frazer, doesn’t Charlotte get any shows?
At the Atlanta Dino Jr. show, we ran into j as we were getting back to the highland. I think Brent looked at him, starstruck, and said, “Hey!” J kept on walking. He’s lucky I didn’t know what room he was in. Last time I ran into a celebrity rock star at the highland, I left a bag of rubbish in front of his door (See the 5/20/2004 news entry at http://www.canardband.com).
Like I said, Charlotte is dead city, music-wise. We did get X a few months ago, but I was out of town. I will say that when Yo La Tengo came, I had a lot more fun than seeing them in Atlanta because the venue wasn’t packed to the gills. This is a funny town. Like Atlanta, but smaller, not so stuck-up, and less interesting. But Charlotte does (shameless plug coming) have an excellent bookstore.
Holy crap, that picture of Donovan and Melonhead wanking is hilarious.
