Planet 10
Here’s another rather raw, but rocking live cut by the Singing Spoons. “Chest Rabbit/With a Kiss” is from a board tape recorded 1/20/90 at Planet 10. Planet 10 was a great hole in the wall rock club on South Macomb across from the Civic Center that was run by Larry and Mike. Those guys booked us in there a lot and we always had a great time. It was a good place to try out new stuff and we did some strange things on stage. It is now a parking lot. All I remember from that night was that there was a brawl involving some people up the street and that my friend Pat was attacked by a bicycle. Not sure if this can be confirmed.
Zamfir: Master of the Panfish.
We always seemed to play the best gigs when there were fewer than five people in the audience.
That’s from that gig. I remember a few weeks later you took your guitar out of the case ad it reeked. It had fish scales all over the neck. Disgusting. About the audience thing…it was always a gamble. One gig there may be 50 people and then the next you would get four. It’s still like this here in Tallahassee.
Planet 10 gigs were hands-down the best. In my mind, clouded with the cobwebs of age, the panfish/artificial New Year’s gig was the single best gig ever. Well, that and the Lemonheads show. But there was something about the 10; I think it was the almost complete lack of physical and mental separation from the audience. I remember one Planet 10 show where I raised the pickups on the Hondo Strat as high as they would go, and the damn thing basically fed back like a rusty banshee through the whole gig, and Will Ryan (RIP) said it was his favorite show we ever did.
I remember that show for sure. I’ll post a bunch of Planet 10 photos shortly. I’ve got quite a few. My favorite was that new Year’s gig where we strapped the plastic Santa Clause head to Chris’ back. I rmember he wore a Spandau Ballet T-shirt that night along with his ubiquitous sweat pants.
Yeah I got hit w/ a bike inner tube in a fracas that almost turned in to a race riot and just came out of no where. Still I loved Planet Ten playing there was the best cause you were in the audience. The Spoons shows always seemed to add to the decor of the place as in every time you guys played you left som,e weird thing behind that ended up nailed to the wall. THat fucking Santa Claus head was there for years.
