You Lifted Up Your Covers and Found Bacon!

Monday, June 12th, 2006

Soon I am going to be posting the two official cd Bacon Ray releases on this page. I am very proud to have been a member of that band in all its incarnations and was so happy that we were able to do a reunion gig last year. Merlin Mann is the king of the covers and he taught me to enjoy playing them again. Here’s some of our finer(?) moments playing cover tunes in a live environment. “Burning for You” by B.O.C. and “Rockin’ in the Free World” , the ubiquitous Neil Young tune, are both from a later gig opening for the Aonoamonon(sp?) and Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy, etc. “What Jail is Like” is an Afghan Whigs cover from a cd release party. Brent Mcneal is on these three tracks.     “Bea(s)tmaster Carpet Cleaner” , a ridiculous original tune has a surprise in the middle and is from another AAJ related release party and features the Prince on freakish slide guitar/Lance products. Wooo, rock on Lonesome Dave!

I smell Bacon!

James Rose(formerly Boyle) sent me a huge package of Bacon Ray memorabilia he collected when he was a wee lad in Tallahassee. Now that he’s got a family and a new baby-he doesn’t have time to look after this crap and has moved on to more important things. He has graciously donated his collection to this site. Thanks Electric Mayo! So here are some flyers and set lists!

It’s Unnatural

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

There were plenty of retards in Publix tonight. Very frustrating, as I reached for the smoked gouda I was almost run over by one of these damn things . This only serves to make everybody even more miserable. It would be more interesting if Publix could use a belt drive people system like at the airport.I had an idea that I wanted to set up a store where everybody laid flat stomach down on an elevated conveyor belt and rode around the store grabbing stuff. What a lazy bastard I am. We’d be human mayo for sure.

Here’s a newer Canard solo cut called “The Natural” it’s a little rocker. I’m not sure what its about. I think it may be about being a slave to a job that you hate. We’re human beings man! We’re supposed to be free!

Oh and here’s a classic outtake from the Golden Master sessions. Well, actually at the time it was going to be called Medieval Thymes. This was finally fused together from all of its parts. I give thee “Bea(s)tmaster Carpet Cleaner” . A song that conveys some disappointment in ELP and a heartbroken love of alcohol. I’m on bass, Merlin on guitar, The Prince on guitar and the always on time Beard for his expressive drumming. Dated for its Coolio reference in the bizarre reggae breakdown in which the protagonist Shabba Ranks would like to visit the Shoney’s breakfast bar and slobber all over this. Feeling irie?

Also, did anybody ever remember what a jerk off Eric LaSalle was when he left ER? His career is blowin’ up. Here he is in a recent publicity shot.

More Bacon

Here’s a couple of tracks from Bacon Ray. “Young and Evil” is from the first bacon ray cassette which featured the bass talents of Chris Gleaseman. He was and is a good egg and friend. We recorded the drums on 4 track, dumped it to 8 track reel to reel and then recorded Merlin’s guitar through the shittiest little Peavey we could find. It’s noisy, drunken fun. Next is a great live version of “War of the Gloved Ones” from a 1998 show opening for Will Oldham and Anomoanon complete with some classy banter. A belated thanks to Jack C. for hooking us up for that one. We all wore capes that night. Oh, and here’s what we looked like circa 1999 at Georgia Street,

Join the Bacon Legion!

Monday, February 6th, 2006

This week’s selection’s are “Tomfoolery” by Bacon Ray. This was the A side of our “legendary” ep that also featured “Sundays in a Row” and “Plica Plica”. Probably the best selling 45 I’ve ever been involved with. You can also find it on the AAJ comp ‘SHMUH’. Merlin Mann plays the crap out of the bass on this, Jason plays wang bar play doh guitar and the Beard pounds the skins.

Second up is a Newsboy Legion tune. “Irish Lust” was on the ‘Jimmy Don’t Like That’ EP. When writing the lyrics I was trying to indulge in stereotypes/cliches against a backdrop of 50′s style “I wanna take you on a date, school is a drag” bullshit complete with some sweet synth from Mr. Enemy from Space!

A quick note: All of the comments were unfortunately lost during the migration of the site. We apologize for this and encourage comments as we do not plan on moving again. Thanks for checking us out.

More tunes!

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

Today we have a couple more songs. This time it’s THE RAY…Bacon Ray. Two cuts from ‘The Golden Master’. First up is “Judged by Beer” which is a little ditty that was written and recorded in between the departure of the Prince and the arrival of the Brence. So it’s me on guitar and vocals, Merlin Mann on bass and Bruce Hamilton on the drums. This was also co-engineered with Tommy Hamilton. A great guy. Check out his stuff with Gruel and Nel Aspinal. The other song is “Philip GlassBottomBoat” which has me on bass, vocals;Merlin on Guitar,String ensemble and vocals; Bruce on the skins and the Prince on the wang dang poodle. This tune also features Bruce’s only known vocal performance on the bridge about fake chimps. Enjoy! Hoping to have some actual rarer Bacon Ray stuff up soon.
